Skateistan and the world!

War, bombs, IED’s, children, oppression, starvation and skateboarding.  Yes!  I did say skateboarding.  Who would have thought that the effects of a few guys in California 20+ years ago would be bringing education, women’s rights, food and a feeling of freedom to children in one of the most war stricken areas of the entire planet?

Have you ever heard someone say they feel free when riding their skateboard, snowboard, skis, kayak, bicycle, or anything else similar in nature?  Well through Skateistan, children in Kabul, Afghanistan are experiencing something, that we have known since we got onto our instrument of choice.  A sense of freedom, of independence, maybe a sense of rebellion, but most importantly, a sense of peace.  Hopefully for them, this feeling translates into action, as their area of the world continues to struggle through the complexities of politics, oil, poverty and oppression.

I can’t help but feel that we take some of our freedom for granted when I see a video like this, which for me, puts into perspective why I should be thankful for the things I have and am able to do.  I hope it does the same for you!

Here are some links to videos about Skateistan as well as their website with information about how to get involved should you decide to do so.

Cheers, and thank you Skateistan for making a positive impact on the world!
