Downtown State College has been running its First Friday promotion since June, but if you’re a little in the dark, feel free to take a moment to read our write-up from back then.

This Friday (11/7), the downtown area and Appalachian Outdoors are pulling out all the stops to make this a special night for all. And with all the hoopla surrounding this month’s First Friday, I’ve decided to dedicate this Five on Friday to highlighting all the reasons why you won’t want to miss it.

  1. Tree Lighting Ceremony (5:30 – 7:00 PM)
Yes, it’s that time of year. The temps are dropping, the grass is frosting, and Christmas specials are starting to pop up. State College will be holding their annual tree lighting ceremony right on Allen St. between Calder Way and College Ave. The ceremony will be emceed by Jeff Brown and feature plenty of performers throughout the entire ceremony. The ceremony will end with the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the tree. The ceremony is a kid-favorite so be sure to get there early to get a great seat. tree-light
  2. Street Performers A’Plenty
Throughout all of the downtown area, there will be street performers of all sorts providing entertainment as you stroll through the area. From musicians to magicians and even belly dancers, there will be a little something for everyone to enjoy.
  3. Local Artwork
If you’re interested in seeing what the various galleries are displaying, they’ll have plenty of their works to see. Or if you’re more into local, independent artists, you’ll want to check out the Pop-Up Gallery on Beaver Ave. and Frasier St. If it’s focused exhibits you seek, stop by the Fraser Street Gallery to see the “Hues of Happy Valley” exhibit.
  4. Free Food!
Several galleries and stores will have light refreshments for you and the family. The Tree Lighting Ceremony will have cookies and hot chocolate to keep you and your kids nice and relaxed. Stop by Appalachian Outdoors, and we’ll have snacks and cider (hot or cold) for the kids, and for parents, we’ll have some adult beverages for you to enjoy as you meander around the store.
  5. Event-Only Deals
Several stores in the downtown area will be having specials throughout the day, so you’ll want to stop by your favorites to see what’s marked down. Because of the festive feel of this First Friday, Appalachian Outdoors will be extending our discounts throughout the entire day. Not just the typical 5-9 hours of First Friday, but from open-to-close, you can take advantage of these great deals:

20% off kids’ outerwear & apparel (excludes footwear, accessories, and Life is Good)
20% off when you buy 3 pairs of socks
20% off Adidas outdoor footwear

We hope to see you tonight for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Stop in for some light refreshments, check out some deals, and enjoy the show! Happy Friday, everyone!
