Picking the right hiking boots can be tricky. There are so many options that it can be overwhelming, choosing between waterproof or not, high or low top, heavy or lightweight. Much of it comes down to personal preference, but it is very important to consider what activities you plan to partake in with your boots.

When I decided on the TPS 520s from Asolo, it was based off of two important factors. First, they are exceptionally comfortable. Second, they work well for anything from day hikes to backpacking trips.

The TPS 520s are fully seam-sealed with a GORE-TEX lining, making them 100% waterproof. With a full-grain leather upper and Vibram outsoles, these boots are tanks. They provide supports for traversing over uneven terrain while keeping ankles aligned, while low and high density polyurethane midsoles provide extra propulsion while in stride. They are also crampon compatible for your more rugged adventures.

I primarily use my TPS boots for day hiking and 2-3 day backpacking trips, although, they could certainly handle longer stretches. They’re very durable, and did take me a longer than the average time to break in, but since I didn’t jump right on the trail with them for an extended period of time, it was relatively painless, and I have still never gotten a blister from them, or sustained an ankle injury on the trail while wearing them.

On a cautionary note, these boots are not for the ultra-lighter. They are heavy. For me, that translates into durability, support, and a long lifespan, but averaging over 3 pounds per pair puts them on the heavier side. The weight hasn’t impeded any of my trips, and I enjoy the sturdy feeling of the boots.

For anyone looking for a durable, high quality hiking and backpacking boot, I would highly recommend the Asolo TPS 520s. Since I’ve had them, I’ve worn them everywhere from going to class to hiking through the mountains, and I couldn’t be happier about how they’ve held up. I’m looking forward to many more years with my pair, and many more hikes.
