Patagonia Apparel for Spring

by Dan Trew.

With fewer frozen feet and fingers, active pursuits in the spring are much more pleasant than their winter counterparts. Patagonia’s new and updated technical styles for the spring are sure to make them even more enjoyable. High output activities like trail running or mountain biking will be where pieces like the Patagonia Upslope Hoody, Torrentshell, Houdini Jacket, Nine Trails Shorts, and Strider Skirt really improve the experience.Patagonia Hoodie

Starting out in the early mornings or going late into the night often means the temperature will be less than optimal for your chosen pursuit. From the first hill on your running route to that last pedal in the parking lot, the Patagonia Upslope Hoody can give you the extra bit of warmth you need to keep pushing your limits. The Upslope uses Regulator 1 fleece, Patagonia’s low density gridded fleece that moves moisture and traps in thermal energy without weighing you down or sacrificing breathability. This mid-layer is at its best keeping you warm and dry while you push on through cooler temperatures. When you–or the world–warm up, this hoody stores away with little bulk. Just don’t forget it’s there when you stop, or things get cool again.

Central Pennsylvania is not known for its long periods of sun, so when rain happens–and it surely will happen–the newly redesigned Torrentshell keeps you happy as a clam without the clammy feeling. Waterproof and breathable protection means even in the heaviest of downpours you will stay nice and dry from the elements or your own body’s moisture. The Torrentshell is constructed from a durable outer shell with a waterproof, breathable lining and micro dot pattern on the inside to raise the material off your skin. The end result is a comfier you.

Many jackets use similar technologies, but the Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket has a few features to help set  it apart from the crowd. The main zipper is surrounded by three layers of material to prevent wind and water from passing through the zipper. Most jackets use a hook and loop closure or other difficult to open system. When the jacket is open, another distinguishing factor is evident: the clean interior design. Most jackets use mesh for their pockets, but the Torrentshell uses the actual jacket material. This means you won’t snag your keys when you take them out. The jacket even stuffs down into its pocket for ease of storage and travel. In between deluges, the hood can stow away with the use of a tab at the back of the jacket, and the under arm vents can be opened to keep the air flowing should things get a bit toasty. An upgrade to the stretch version gives you an added bit of flexibility in the yoke of the jacket and along the forearms to increase mobility. The zippers are also changed over to fully waterproof versions in this upgrade.

If ultralight and fast are two words that describe your outdoor pursuits, then the Patagonia Houdini Jacket is there to give you protection from the world without the cost of weight or size. No, it’s not magic, but it does feature a durable water repellant which gives the jacket the ability to shed light rain in the event of an unexpected precipitation.

Finally, the Patagonia Nine Trails Shorts for men and womenare designed to accompany you on high output adventures. Built-in liners and venting keep you dry, while expanding pockets store your stuff. The outside of the shorts are treated with a durable water repellant that serves to slough off water from the morning dew to the old leaky bottle. Add on fully recycled polyester, and these shorts are as green as the trees you’ll run by this spring.

For gals who prefer the skirt option instead of the short, the Patagonia Strider Skirt fits the same bill as the Nine Trails, but features a mesh hem line and added mobility.
