What began as a newsletter dedicated to safe mountaineering in the year 1969 has become one of the most trustworthy gear companies on the market under the name Mountain Safety Research. MSR began with Larry Penberthy; Larry was a skilled mountaineer, engineer, and inventor with a desire for testing outdoor products like stove fuels, ropes, pitons, and other necessary pieces of gear for enjoying the outdoors. After a few months of testing, Penberthy found that this was a daunting task for just one person, so he enlisted a few fellow workers and started to produce the safety equipment that was necessary to properly get outdoors. Over time, these products became streamlined into everything that you'd need for mountaineering as well as more light and casual camping. Since Penberthy started the brand, MSR has carried on his legacy and continues to make high-quality products that range from stoves and snowshoes all the way to super lightweight tents and other outdoor essentials.
