Five on Friday: Men’s Warm Socks for Winter

By: Levi Opsatnic

I’m not one to buy into everything that I see on the television, but with Punxsutawney Phil signaling six more weeks of winter paired with the upcoming single digit temperatures hitting State College, I think that it’s pretty safe to say that spring and warm weather aren’t as close as some of us would like to believe. With some of our most brutal winter days still ahead of us, and a two-week long discussion on warm womens winter boots  and mens winter boots, I find it an appropriate time to dive into an accessory that really helps you get the most warmth out of your boots on cold days. The accessory at hand here…or foot, is socks.

Yes, I can certainly understand that most view socks as something simple and not a huge thing to dwell over, but I’ve found that failing to outfit yourself with a good pair of socks can really ruin a cold day for you. This week, we’ll begin with some toasty socks for all of the guys out there. However, all of you womanly readers can rest easy knowing that we’ll be here to cover you next Friday.

1. Wigwam Mills Pine Lodge Socks

Wigwam Mills Pine Lodge Socks

In the world of toasty winter socks, you’ll quickly find that it’s pretty difficult to beat the awesome qualities of merino wool, but for those of us out there who suffer from a wool allergy or simply skin irritation from the fabric, the Pine Lodge Socks from Wigwam Mills were made just for you. With a construction of acrylic, cotton, stretch nylon, and spandex, you’ll be sure to get a wealth of warmth without any possible irritation. And if you pair that form of supreme comfort with the classic tube sock look of the Pine Lodge Socks, you’ll quickly find that you and your feet are in for a real winter treat.

2.  Fits Sock Co. Ultra Heavy Expedition Rugged Boot Socks

The brand “Fits Sock Co.” may sound new to some of you out there, in fact up until a year or so ago, they were also pretty new to me. Though, I can confidently say that they have become one of my newly discovered, favorite wool socks. Their Ultra Heavy Expedition Rugged Boot Socks are no exception to that rule either. Coming in as one of the warmest socks in the Fits Sock family, these socks will keep your feet feeling warm on all types of winter escapades. As their company name implies, these socks, and all of their socks, maintain a high focus on the “fit.” Straying away from the old-fashioned “tube” form of socks, Fits implements a Dynamic Toe Cup, Heel Lock, and Full Contact Cuff to imitate the form of your body’s feet for days filled with comfort; pair that with their predominantly wool construction, and your feet are left brimming with comfort and warmth.

3. Smartwool Trekking Heavy Crew Socks

Smartwool grants you the benefit of some seriously toasty feet, without a ton of bulk, in the creation of their Trekking Heavy Crew Socks. These socks are made mainly from wool, which means that your feet stay warm all day, but also that your moisture is wicked and that odors stay controlled. Also adding in a heavy cushioning and arch brace, your feet get support and will be able to take on high-impact activities with ease. From days spent frolicking in the snow to serious winter hikes, you can certainly rely on the Trekking Heavy Crew Socks to bring the heat to your feet.

4. Darn Tough Boot Sock Full Cushion Socks

Standing by their quality and being crafted in America (Vermont to be exact), Darn Tough makes some socks that offer warmth and some serious durability and their Boot Sock Full Cushion Socks are a real testament to both of those statements. A full cushion along the bottom of these socks provides a welcoming and bracing feel that oozes comfort, while a seamless construction keeps your feet from being irritated after miles of walking. Factor in that these socks are largely crafted from wool, and you get a pair that is ready for any freezing day.

5. Smartwool Mountaineering Extra Heavy Crew Socks

Smartwool takes you one warm step above their Trekking Heavy Socks with the inception of their Mountaineering Extra Heavy Crew Socks. Designed for those days where double-digit temps are a real rarity, Smartwool makes it darn near impossible to beat the warmth of these bad boys. And if warm feet weren’t enough, a reinforced arch joined with an extra heavy cushioning along the bottom of these socks keeps things super comfortable. Whether you’re planning a week long winter camping trip or just want to escape the icy chills of the winter season, Smartwool’s Mountaineering Extra Heavy Crew Socks are here to do the job.
